Hello, and welcome to the worst movie podcast. I'm Ade.
And I'm Aaron, and this is a podcast where we watch the worst movies ever made in the hopes of finding a hidden gem. Enjoying the Dr.
Welcome back, Andrew, to our month of SNL movies. Excited to have you back.
Thank you. Good to be back.
What have you been watching?
I have either of you watched uh Chad Powers?
No. I don't think so. But uh yeah, I I know about it. Is it good?
It's a Hulu show with uh Glenn uh Powell. What's his last name? Is it Powell? It's so much better than it has any right to be. I had to be convinced to watch it because I never ever would have. But uh I mean, because of the movie we're watching today, like Funny Guy with a wig, uh uh it's sort of related. Season two just dropped. Like season one, I was I was anxiously awaiting season two to drop. It's six episodes, very funny. Um, and I just started season two, and I don't know it's very good. It's a very good comedy. Is that where he plays the quarterback? Yeah, like a quarterback? He's yeah, he's an ex-college quarterback that sort of is disgraced, and so he he dresses up like a a college kid named Chad Powers with like a goofy voice and kind of a backwoods persona and gets on a college team and starts winning. And that is that's about as far as you need to know to check it out. But it uh it is unfortunately very good.
It's it's kind of topical with the uh NFL players going back to college and playing these days. Oh, yeah. You guys heard about that? Yeah. I have no idea what you're talking about.
NFL? What is that?
No, there's some players that had a brief stint in the NFL. I think they washed out and they went back to college and they're like back on the football team again. I don't know. A lot of a lot of teams are like banning that and it's uh it's kind of a at the college age. I don't know that it matters. Like you can go to college at they can you can never go to college at any age?
I want to go back to college. Yeah. You can go back to college. One of the latest episodes of Always Sunny, the new season. They do a uh quote unquote back to college thing.
Oh, really? Yeah.
I haven't seen the new season yet.
Is it good?
I love uh the show and the characters, and so it's I think sometimes it's hard to like tell how much of it is just like my nostalgia for I it's it's a little uneven. I feel like the back to college one, I laughed a few times, but then one of the episodes I think I was just kind of like, huh, the whole time. But yeah. Um I think we've talked about this before. I'm not a huge fan of Danny DeVito's character. And so I think sometimes it's just like it gets too cartoonish with him. I like the Charlie stuff and the Dennis and D stuff and the Mac stuff, but if it's too much of Frank's girl stuff, sometimes it's just not for me.
I see.
So have you ever liked his character, or you've always had a problem with the I th they talk a lot, they've talked a lot about how he really helps the show and like they all hate the first season. Um and I'm like, uh the first season was great. I love the first season. Uh yeah, I I've never been a I I don't hate him. I just he does just doesn't do it for me.
I mean, I don't think he saved the show in the sense that he brought like talent that they didn't have or jokes that they didn't have. He just brought star power and attention to the show. So yeah, I don't think that like he's a great actor necessarily. He's kind of got his niche, but yeah, like I I yeah, I get it. I like the degenerate Frank character. So yeah. But I feel I do feel like their last few seasons have kind of been uneven at best. Yeah.
Well, you should check out the college one. Um, okay. So we're sorry, we can go back to college. Uh yeah, Glen Powell likes to dress up in wigs and pretend to be other people at the same place. Like a uh Hitman or Woolley, yeah, but uh it's just so confusing. No, I don't think. Um all right, I'll have to check that out.
What else has he done that anything? In Hitman he did, and then uh there was Running Man, he did that a little bit. Oh yeah, a little bit.
Uh he did that in uh oh I just watched uh what was the one where he was uh heir to a fortune? Um How to Make a Killing. I can't remember if I liked that movie. I think it was okay. Um but uh he's 16th in line for this fortune or something like that. The whole setup is like he has to kill all these like distant cousins to get the fortune. But I think he like gets in a lot of disguises and stuff like that in that one too. Yeah, I just think his characters in a lot of the movies he's playing like disguise himself beyond he's like so good looking, I guess, that he has to just write that into the they have to write that in the script that he has to disguise himself.
Well he might be doing the Brad Pitt thing where he doesn't want to be uh sort of pigeonholed into the leading leading man, so he's like, Oh yeah, look, 12 monkeys, I'll I'll put on a wig and talk with a lisp and you know expand my my options.
Brad Pitt really nailed that like handsome character actor. Yeah, snatch. Yeah, perfect. What have you been watching, Aaron? Not a whole lot. I've just I've I'm on season two of The Wire on my rewatch now, so which is a great season. Yeah.
Have we talked about this season too much?
Uh we've talked about it a few times, I think. That's the Frank Sabatka, the the docs uh uh season. Yeah.
Uh there is never too many times to talk about the wire, I guess. I agree. Um have you seen the wire, Andrew?
Uh I haven't seen all of it. Um I've seen the first off the podcast. Sorry. I know. I it is always, you know, it's just one of those things that I'm it's just like I'm waiting for the Odyssey on on the at the State Museum IMAX. Yeah. I'm waiting for the wire in the right conditions because I know that I will love it. I love the first season. Uh didn't the second season get some sort of it wasn't as well received as the first season, at least initially.
Yeah. Yeah. And I it was controversial controversial because a lot of people, well, myself included, like I loved the first season, was eager to watch the second season. Um my probably the story I've told even on this podcast is that I watched it like on DVDs, like I'd I think rented the season one DVDs from Blockbuster or something, and then like went to Blockbuster at like 10 p.m. at night to get season two, because I was like, I've I've gotta keep and they didn't have it, and I like drove to a bunch of different places to try to find it and finally found it like midnight at Meyer or something and bothered.
Kids could today could never understand. Yeah, never understand.
Uh uphill both ways uh to get the DVDs. And then I was like, what's all this like dock work or shit? Like it just it seems like it takes a hard left turn. Um and I was really sour on season two until like I went back and watched the whole series again. I was like, oh, actually this really makes sense in the grand scheme of you know the the arc of the series.
Yeah. I mean it just moves the scope of the corruption in Baltimore from just the street level drug gang business to how are the drugs even getting into Baltimore. And so yeah, I mean it it it pulls back, I think, on the the field of view from the first season and it's a lot more broad. Yeah. But yeah, I I love it. I did I don't think I watched it when it was on air, so I watched all of them like just one right after another, binged it, and I didn't feel like the second season dropped off.
Aaron, I know no one loves the wire as much as Ade, at least no one I've ever met. But do you are you up there with him uh on the wire? Are you a huge wire fan too?
Yeah, I haven't maybe seen it as many times as Ade has. Uh, and I found it through Ade, so my love for it is is uh because of his love for it. Um I've seen all the yeah, I've seen all the seasons at least once. I I definitely think it's a top five show all time. Yeah. Now that's been a while since I watched I'll I'll watch it.
Thank you. I'm just too enthusiastic for it.
Yeah. Yeah. You can't trust his uh his love for it.
Yeah. It's it's actually been a while. I wonder how dated it feels with the technology and stuff, but does that is that distracting? I think that's fine.
Yeah, it doesn't bother me. Like I know it's payphones and pagers and stuff, but uh it still feels relevant and it's such a in-depth, it just feels so real the way the the dialogue, the plot, the way the actors, yeah, some of the actors I think were actually criminals and stuff. So uh yeah, so it just feels very real. And the fact that it's dated tech technology doesn't matter.
Well, it's also dated uh I I just read recently Baltimore's crime rate, murder rate is at an all-time low. I think it's like a I'm gonna butcher this, but I wanna say like at the the time of the wire to today, like the murder rate is like a quarter of what it was you know back then. So it's it's really you know a lot different in terms of the profile of the city.
Well, and I like I don't wanna I don't think this spoils anything, but after the first season, they kind of they drop the pages and the payphones and move away from it. So yeah, yeah. I mean it's just cell phones and stuff like that, which is we still got that technology, so they're just flip phones. Yeah.
Uh speaking of crime, my what I'm watching is uh did you see the extended Grand Theft Auto trailer on Netflix? Are you being serious right now? I am being serious. It's like a 30-minute trailer. It's like footage from the game.
Uh that you watched it aired on Netflix, right? Yeah, yeah.
Is that what you said or YouTube? I said Netflix.
Okay. Yeah, yeah. I watched it on YouTube. I didn't want to give Netflix the view. So why why why do you care about it? Take that Netflix. Yeah. I just have an issue to Google. I just have an issue with putting a preview of your game behind another paywall. Yeah. Don't you pay for Netflix? Like already? Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like, I pay for it, but I don't think that people should have to pay to get the preview of the game. And like you don't have to. You could watch it on YouTube or wait, but I I don't like the uh I think it's a bad bad the optics are bad on it. If you if you want to dive in, for a game that people waited 13 years for to come out to be like, you gotta pay to watch the to watch the preview with everyone else. That just stinks, I think.
But you watch it on YouTube. So is it was it available on YouTube too also?
Not not um at the same time. You had to wait till it was after before people started uploading it. So you got it late if you watched on YouTube.
All right.
Anyway, Aaron, because I had to buy a movie ticket to see the preview for Star Wars The Phantom Menace. I think it was to Super or Super Troopers, maybe. Wow. Starship Troopers. You had to you had to buy a ticket to see Starship Troopers if you wanted to see the first Phantom Menace trailer. I think that's accurate. You're holding a grudge. Same scheme.
I don't like it one bit. Starship Troopers fucked me up so bad as a kid. That was the first movie that I saw that had like gore. Yeah. Uh and it was a lot of gore. I had to sit in the hall for the rest of the movie. Not a kid's movie. No.
In the hall of the movie theater?
Yeah. I went there with my dad and and John, and they wanted to finish it. And I was like, I'll be in the hall. Just go sit in the hall. Yeah, it was too much gore. Oh, that's funny. I thought it was gonna be like a you know kids' action movie, but it was not.
Well, I didn't know I would touch on a nerve about watching the Grand Theft Auto trip. What did you what did you think of the game? I think it looks cool. Yeah. I don't know. I thought it was cool. I'm excited. Why'd it take him so long? I don't know, the all those polygons and pixels.
I I have a I I think it'll be a great game. They've had plenty of uh content to draw from for parody over the last 13 or 15 years, whatever it's been. Yeah, 13 years.
Yeah. Are you uh are you into Grand Theft Auto, Andrew? Will you buy this game?
Not a ton. Uh I will probably buy this game just because uh of the hype, but I didn't play five at all. So I played some of the games earlier. Um and then uh uh five came out when I was just not playing a lot of video games, but I think I will probably give six a go. Did you play Red Dead Redemption? Yes. Very good. Really enjoyed Red Dead. Yeah, yeah, fantastic.
It's like I didn't play a five game. I don't think I've played many games like in the last I don't know, five years. Like I haven't played a story game in a while. Like it's all been Overwatch or Fortnite and like just kind of You used to.
Yeah. I remember you played um Bioshock. Yeah, Bioshock. Uh yeah, you know those are fun.
Yeah, I kind of miss that era. Well, I'm excited. November 19th.
Speaking of cool cars.
Perfect. Uh yeah. A plus, no notes. Uh yeah, let's talk about Joe Dirt from 2001. Um starring David Spade, 9% Rotten Tomatoes. Uh, 18 million budget and uh 31 million box office. Do you have a synopsis for this, Aaron?
Yeah. Uh little Joe Dirt was abandoned by his parents at the Grand Canyon, and uh the movie tells the rest of his story trying to find his parents and uh find his home.
What are your histories with this movie? Had had you seen it before? I assume you had. I saw it in theaters, yeah.
Yeah, I definitely saw it in on video. I don't I don't know that I saw it in theaters, but it was a big hit in I mean, I would have been early high school when this came out, maybe sophomore junior year. So very quotable. It was uh it was a popular film when it came out for sure. Film is a strong word. I wouldn't it was a popular movie when it came out.
Oh, it's like go down that rabbit hole of film versus movie. Picture.
We don't have to, it's not a film, it's a movie.
We know. Uh but it sounds like it wasn't like this wasn't your all-time favorite for either of you. It wasn't like a huge movie. No.
No. This was pre-Anchorman, uh, and I feel like Anchorman was when I really like latched on to movies as like, this is part of my identity now. This is my sense of humor. Yeah. Uh yeah, I I remember seeing it and thinking it was funny at the time, but it it didn't make a huge impression.
Are you fans of David Spade? Where does he rank on the SNL alum list for you guys?
For me, he's like a side character. I'm a Chris Farley fan, and so like he was he always came with Chris Farley, so yeah. I liked him in Chris Farley movies.
Yeah, I feel like I didn't watch as much of the the era where David Spade was in it. And when I did, I was paying attention to yeah, Farley and Sandler and a couple of the others in that era. I did like David Spade, but it was because of the movies that he did afterward or Just Shoot Me or other things that were post-S and L.
What did you guys think of this movie on Second Watch or Recent Watch? Did you like it? It was okay. I thought it was okay.
It was fun. I it uh I think it's paced pretty well. I uh you know, it's a fun, like kind of a road movie, gets from one thing to the next. It's got pretty good laughs uh throughout, or attempted laughs in some cases, but it's you know uh it wasn't boring.
Yeah. I did laugh at this more than I laughed at Roxbury, and the I agree the pacing was better in this. Roxbury dragged for so long, it felt like this felt shorter and quicker, and yeah, it was just a better movie.
Yeah. I will point out it's longer, it's 91 minutes uh versus Roxbury's.
To its that I mean, that's just uh either a credit to Joe Derrett or a diss to Roxbury because it goes to show what just laughing a couple times will do for a movie.
Well, I had an opposite experience to you to you two. So uh I didn't laugh once during this movie. Um That's a shame. Yeah, I I felt really confused about 30 minutes into it because I realized like I wasn't even I was like, the movie's clearly started, right? Kind of you know, jumps into this narrative structure that I know we can talk about. But I kept waiting for the like, okay, the jokes are gonna start. And I was like, oh, I I think they're just all going over my head. I don't get what the joke is. It seems to me like the joke is this character has a mullet. And he's white trash. But they don't even really like, like he doesn't do much beyond the very first scene of him like driving in with that beat-up car that seems white trashy that they make fun of. He introduces himself by saying he's supposed to be dumb, I guess, but then he he doesn't really act dumb. He seems very intelligent throughout the movie. I don't understand what they're making fun of him about, other than just this hair.
Well, he's not the most like well-rounded character. Uh he's like uh he's not super well written. I'm I'll give you that.
Well, he's the main character and they name the movie after him.
So who is the more well-rounded character? I didn't say that there was one more well-rounded, I'm sure.
The sort of eternal optimism is, I think, kind of the point and is really good. Like the dude just has one horrible thing happen to him after another and is just kind of going with the flow. Yeah, he's easy to root for. Yeah. He's likable, which is nice. Uh okay. Yeah, did you like him a day? Do you do you like him as a character or a person?
I don't think I did. I I I think just because I was confused. Like I was like, I'm supposed to be watching a comedy. If it was played straight, maybe because it was it's kind of like a force gump. I mean, it's basically a force gump rip-off, but just with more out there characters, I guess. Interesting.
I was gonna say this is Waterboy for David Spade.
Uh I don't remember Waterboy well enough, but I just mean the structure is such where he's just telling his life story and he like goes from one town and one set of characters to another and kind of. It's all a flashback. Yeah. Which, okay, so let's just can we just start with so so the way it's set up in the movie is he's working at a radio station as a janitor, and then the producer whatever is like, whoa, what's up with you? And is just so take he was like, You've gotta come in and talk to our to uh what's his name? Dennis Xander Kelly. Yeah.
Yeah, played by Dennis Miller. I forgot how unlikable Dennis Miller is.
Yeah, yeah, definitely the least likable character in the movie. He's just just an asshole right off like, man, what's up with you? And again, like freak. Yeah, it's just all it is is it's his hair. That's that's it. Uh like sideburns. Yeah, but that I mean, I guess I'm that as part of his he doesn't say anything. He doesn't say anything that is worth making fun of. His his outfit is just a jan janitor's uniform, so it's not like, oh, you're just such a freak because you're wearing like no, it's just only his hair. And then he's like, Let me interview you for four. hours and do a four-part over the next week I'll just interview about your life story because you have weird hair.
I love that this only works if Dennis Miller doesn't have any programming scheduled for his his radio show.
And all for the janitor that works there. That's that's with a mullet.
Yeah. And throughout the movie they show audience like from all around the country glued to the radio listening to this like it's just this national event. Everyone's just captivated by like, oh man, this guy with a mullet. I can't we're wait to hear more about why he has a mullet. Like I think I just couldn't get past the premise.
It was a little nostalgic for me for like those days when we weren't so fragmented and one like story could capture the nation. Uh you know everybody's got their own streaming service and we're all watching different things and nobody's nobody's on the same page anymore.
I mean you can't even watch a uh global event on the streaming service on which it aired you're like no I'm gonna protest it and watch it on this other global streaming service. Yeah I know see what happened to us I mean but has ever ever in your life have you gathered around a radio to listen to a story?
I mean 9-11 happened touche OJ Chase.
It did remind me of uh the Truman show you know at the end of the Truman show when they're all like gathered around the different like radios and televisions and everybody's rooting for them.
Yeah obviously a little different in that case but it um it did have that feel yeah it made sense with the Truman show is people were watching Truman grow up and we're all invested in Joe Dirt now. Yeah I I mean Joe Dirte uh yeah speaking of his name in the first few minutes he gets stopped by the security guard who couldn't tell if he knew knew him before or not anyway and uh he made Chris Farley's brother by the way oh really the security guard oh it was yeah yeah two of Chris Farley's brothers were in this movie wasn't Chris Farley's brother in basketball he was like uh oh I think he was um anyway the security guard is like why'd your daddy name name you that Joe Dirt like he must have really hated you your dad named you Joe he must have really hate like how would the security guard know why would you assume that his dad named his name is not yeah yeah that was a a strange uh plot point I thought it it is established that his dad did name him with a different last name than the whole movie hinged on that he didn't know his real last name it felt like they just had to they had to add that plot point so that the story would make sense like they worked backwards from oh we need to have some way that he doesn't actually know his real last name. Yeah they'd really reach in for Verissa Millitude and in SML week just like yeah I think if I just can't get over the premise then maybe it's just hard for my brain to I also just didn't understand you are going to struggle this month. So yeah what did you guys find funny? I mean I'm I'm not like I'm not going to try to argue against it. I'm just like I don't I I didn't really feel like there were jokes in this movie.
I just think David Spade's charming I like David Spade. Yeah I think he's funny I did laugh uh at the end when you got into the little fight with Kid Rock on the street and then he went running off into the ditch and he was like running really funny. I don't know it's just little things that made me laugh throughout the movie like that. Maybe I don't really like David Spade.
Because I feel like he kind of has a snarkiness about him that's a little like biting and yeah he's like very cynical maybe that was my problem.
I think I like it was good and quotable. There are a bunch of funny little like one line things in the movie that I thought were was funny. Did you write any of them down? I have yeah I think I have a couple you're like prove it I'm not again I'm not trying to be confrontational I'm just like like I it just I felt like the whole thing just went over my head. I was just confused like what well you were talking about that security guard scene and there was no reason for that security guard to be such a dick to go dirt like right when he pulled out every character is just terrible to him. Yeah and one of the early quotes in the movie I think he's maybe talking to the dog like he's telling the dog but he's like a town is a place where everyone hates you and that and all the kids will try to beat you up or something. Yeah yeah yeah and just so like upbeat about it and just like this is the way things are yeah um there were a couple good comebacks in the movie like he said you wanna oh you want to fight why don't you stick your head up my ass and fight for air that's funny that is funny yeah my I mean my favorite line of the whole the whole movie there was a kid at the fair and uh he was talking about oh who is this your girlfriend and the kid said uh you should see my girlfriend you'd shit yourself like an eight year old yeah there were there were quite a few funny bits in this I thought I it wasn't my favorite movie like my favorite comedy of that era or favorite SNL movie but it was good it was it was funny I thought yeah I thought the scenes went on way too long like the fireworks scene that was a little humorous when he was saying all the different fireworks names yeah but I was like I don't understand just the what the whole scene I didn't know when he was wrestling the alligator with the huge ash on his cigarette with like three and a half inches of ash apparently not well it was just for me yeah I mean I I'm I'm happy it made you happy yeah thank you we've gotten to the I'm happy it made you happy part of the episode that's probably not good. Well I'm glad it's funny you mentioned that Aude because the I told a couple people that uh we were doing this episode and uh the fireworks scene was like everybody brought up the fireworks scene as like a funny thing. That they loved it? The yeah him listing out all the different fireworks with all the funny names and like hoosker do's and whosker don'ts and all the I think it was good delivery by David Spade and just kind of they let him cook a little bit.
I wonder how many of those he came up with on the spot yeah because I think a lot of them were real names of firecrackers but some of them I'm sure he made up on the spot that was the most impressive delivery I would have gotten tongue tongue tied for sure.
Yeah did you like uh Christopher Walkins character uh no I why not I I mean you know from the start I was like okay like clearly this guy is is pretending to be from he was just shady about where he's from yeah um again didn't really get the joke um also maybe I was like still scratching my head about the Buffalo Bob stuff because it was this extended this extended Silence of the Lambs parody which I don't know if that was just so much more in the ether at the time that they were like oh we have to make it but I looked it up in Silence of the Lambs was 10 years before this were we still talking about Silence of the Lambs. Maybe it was a little bit funny how people kept saying like feeling bad for him like oh I heard what happened and he's like wait what happened um nothing happened.
Yeah I mean I just it was amusing to me in that he was so nonplussed about the whole situation he was like okay I'll put the lotion on the skin I get it like that was the I mean it was that it was a little funny to me it wasn't the funniest scene ever but like it was just his character being completely fine with everything that happens to him throughout the whole movie every like every horrible possible thing happens to him and he's just like okay did you see that he wrote uh Joe Dirt rules on the inside on the wall of the hole that he had him in yeah yeah uh did you like uh Christopher Walken's character I liked him a lot I thought it was really funny I think Christopher Walken is a funny actor uh yeah the dancing was great I loved him dancing he's always just like creepy and weird so yeah I liked his character I thought he was he was entertaining I mean I liked too I thought it was like his best like I'm being Christopher Walken yeah one of his better I'm being Christopher Walken performances before it was super played out. I really enjoyed it and it reminded me of like I said it was it reminded me of uh the Waterboy but it reminded me of Henry Winkler's character in that that it's just like kind of making fun of himself uh a little bit of like I'm gonna be creepy and weird and crazy.
I I thought it was uh a funny character. You keep bringing up the Waterboy did did you know that they are in the same universe the Oh no uh the like Cajun guy uh Blake Park that is the same supposed to be the same character uh farmer Fran or whatever yeah he did go down to Louisiana yes yeah he ran into uh that guy okay yeah that makes sense then um it is funny because everybody treats Adam Sandler's character bad and that is what makes him so angry that he's good at football so it's kind of a foil to the Joe Dirrett he just is totally zen about everything that happens to him.
Yeah the brandy character kind of reminded me of like the Vicky Valencourt like the love interest back home less dangerous probably than Vicky Valencourt why do all the girls fall for him?
All the guys just treat him terribly at first sight and then all the girls are just like he's got that animal magnetism you know did either of you read about David Spade's dating history well in prep for this?
No. It has to be a reference to that at least a little bit because I I guess like back in the day E E, like the channel the magazine called him the George Clooney of the comedy world. Like he was dating here are just here are people that David Spade dated for a long period of time.
Heather Lockleer, Terry Hatcher, Julie Bowen, Lara Flynn Boyle uh he had a kid with a Playboy playmate uh he was young David Spade was just uh out on the town he must have a huge hog that's I don't know he must have a reputation it's a real Pete Davidson situation that he had going on I don't know I don't know what it was but man yeah that's a that's a great uh comparison that's kind of a funny inside joke I feel like a day doesn't know uh how to approach this movie I don't I don't he's like the facts don't add up I don't understand and you like this yeah it's easier to cover if I love it if uh if I love a movie because I'm like all right here are the you know 50 things that I love about this movie it's easier to cover it if I hate it because I'm like this is terrible this is terrible this again I was just like I don't understand what's happening I don't so I don't really have a ton of notes it's probably about like half as do you have a favorite thing about the movie all day like something that did work for you uh uh I I'm I'm really drawing a blank to be honest I I kind of I mean I watched the whole movie but I kind of checked out about halfway through because I'm like I just I'm not it wasn't like I wasn't following it I was just again just kind of like I'm not laughing I'm not uh uh but there there wasn't anything that I hated about it either it wasn't like I'm like oh this performance is terrible this writing is terrible it was just like not funny to me what worked best for you guys I think I liked the sincerity and the good naturedness of it it wasn't a mean uh comedy even though they were making jokes about stereotypes like you said he didn't really do anything that was really egregiously white trash I feel like it is a white trash character but he didn't make white trash people look bad I don't think and I don't think he's stupid he's he just probably didn't go to school so I thought he was a likable character there wasn't a ton of great jokes for me but um I like David Spade and I thought I actually thought Kid Rock was not that bad in this movie and I am not a Kid Rock fan at all. I thought he kind of worked in this movie.
Did you there's a part there's a part in that movie where he has to read a note and he's like reading it really slow and I just wrote I think this is Kid Rock actually trying to read. I know I was like this is either incredible acting or Kid Rock doesn't know how to read doing his best.
Yep was this peak Kid Rock time did he have a peak? I think it probably was like when Ba Witta Ba was big on the radio and he was kind of you know I have no idea what you said I have told you a single Kid Rock song off the top of my head but I do know that one that was I I just know the I am kid rock was that a song where he starts it out saying I'm Kid Rock?
No? Oh my name is Kid Rock. Okay. That is the beginning of Ba Whatabah I know that song then yeah I am Kid Rock.
Hello uh I am Kid Rock you didn't like Kid Rock in this movie Yaday?
Was I supposed to like him? Uh no I did not like him but did you think what did you think of his character? I think it was fine.
Everybody was fine in it uh they they did their parts oh my god yeah he wasn't terrible I'll tell you who was fine white trash Jamie Presley that I think that's why I would like the movie when I was a teenager and yeah Jamie Presley was good yeah I haven't seen her in anything a long time what's what's she been up to just looking I really liked my name is a girl yeah she did 127 episodes of a show called Mom I've never heard of 2014 to 2021. Yeah I don't know that one either oh Alice and Janie was in it like Alice and Janey that sounds like something that's on C V CBS that it's like who is keeping this on broadcast television but then it's like the most watched thing that they have or something along those lines.
You cheated it's literally on CBS uh I know it's it really I feel like CBS has a million of those shows where I'm like who's watching this? But it's on for like eight seasons. What what else do you guys have in your notes about this movie?
I didn't really take that many notes because I watched it immediately before this so if he lives at the station why was he driving in in the morning well he's got a couple places he's I got a couple places that's that's good recall yeah he has two other boiler rooms across around town that he stays in yeah I don't know did you notice when he drove in in the morning that he had his sort of ID badge clipped to his hair it was clipped to his like mullet hair yeah yeah I like that do you think that Brandy would really be into Joe Dirt?
I don't do you yeah he he runs into the old man he runs into trying to steal her hubcaps that that dog scene at the beginning was so strange to me where the the dog got its nuts like frozen to the porch yeah it was so weird I'm like why are they doing this?
I guess that what that the joke was his balls are frozen to the porch but yeah it was such a weird it was like stretched out like taffy it was so long and horrible to look at that's exactly the moment that A Day thought not only do I not like this movie but I'm barely going to watch the rest of it That's probably true.
That was probably the moment where I was like oh this this is the the jokes have already started um and they're just not clicking with me. Yeah dog balls not not in my comedy list by the way I I kind of skipped over the background stuff because I didn't I didn't see much background but um they made a sequel Joe Dirt 2. Did you guys happen to watch the sequel?
I didn't but I looked at it as IMDB it was the first made for digital feature sequel uh aired on Crackle 2015 and Joe Dirt is 25 years old this year and they are uh planning a follow-up with an animated series did you see that no so if you still David Spade still David Spade but obviously animated so yeah he'll play the voice who is clamoring for the Joe Dirt animated sequel 25 years later uh the same people that watch mom maybe the crossover audience is perfect they're in shade of mom yeah I don't know why anybody would want that I did read that David Spade wanted Christopher Walken so bad for that role that he paid him out of his own pocket. Really yeah like the production would not uh couldn't afford him and I think it was him and the head writer who I can't remember his name. Fred Wolf pool yeah him and Fred Wolf pul pooled together and paid for Christopher Walken and then the studio eventually reimbursed them but they wanted him for that role.
That makes sense it I feel like Christopher Walken there's there's one only one Christopher Walken and if you want that you gotta get it from him. Like I don't think anybody else plays that kind of weird character the way he does.
Yeah I can't think of who you would get if you if you do the like okay our our second choice for this is I don't know who that would be.
Yeah I don't know maybe Buscemi but he doesn't really play mobster like weird I think Pacino could do that the weird like Jack and Jill Pacino could could we didn't find out he could do that till later in his career.
Did you love the um scene where he thought that uh Jamie Presley was his sister it was a little disturbing and I guess I didn't yeah timeline of events there. You go ahead Aaron the timeline I don't I I don't know I was a little checked out um I don't know how he came to think that she was his sister. She said something about being abandoned and that she had a brother okay and then he he was like oh god that might be me and then he slept with her anyway and then he told her that he thought she might be a sister and she was like no you're definitely not my brother and then he slept with her again but he wanted her to pretend he was a sister Yeah but that was just a joke to the radio audience.
Yeah supposedly yeah if you trust Joe Dirt Eric I'm not buying it if you take Joe Dirt at his word that's right.
It seemed like at the very least he definitely did sleep with her while thinking there was a strong chance that she could be his sister. Yeah that's what it sounds like and I guess the joke is if she's hot enough that it's fine.
That's uh that's the joke I think 14 year old meme was like that tracks I get it a hundred percent I'm with Joe on this one uh I wrote down I I don't know the teacher uh the teacher that was at the school with Christopher Walken the female teacher that he was kind of hitting on um and she was not having it she was the only person Aaron and the whole uh cast that wasn't having any of Joe Dirt's charm.
That's true. It seemed like maybe she might come around, like it was kind of set up that way, but they cut that part out.
But she did have an amazing line where she just looks at him and goes, The pile of puke's right over there. It's a pretty big pile of puke. Yeah. Yeah.
Even in that scene, though, he was like charming and likable and he's getting all the hot dogs thrown at him and stuff. And he's like, Oh, at least it wasn't hot chili day. Then they throw all the hot chili.
Did you guys read they shortened that scene because test audiences didn't like it because he was like getting too they at that point they liked Joe Dirt too much to see him get pelted with, I guess, too many hot dogs. So they cut that scene down.
I believe it. I mean, I did feel like I felt for him. I I liked his character. I didn't want anything bad to happen to him.
He's an orphan with a wig fused to his head. Of course he feel bad too.
Plus, they had the kid that played Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle play young Joe Dirt, and I I just love that kid.
I guess I guess they they're back, right, with the new Malcolm in the Middle. Did you ever watch the new version of that? I I don't know. Is it out already? I think so. I don't know. Probably on CBS.
Does CBS have a streaming service that you probably crackle? Yeah. CBS now is Oh wait, they're Paramount, aren't they?
They're uh Paramount Plus, I think.
CBS. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I feel like Dewey was one of the kids that retired from acting after that.
He did, yeah. I was looking him up after this movie. He's listed as a former actor. So and there's a bunch of pictures of him just walking around as a normal dude drinking coffee. And I'm like, leave the fucking guy alone.
How far does he have to go as a normal dude? As if he was a normal dude, and not the Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle Ball. How far do you have to go away from Hollywood to be officially listed as a former actor? Because there are a lot of people that are sort of former actors, but yeah.
Yeah. I think you have to probably make a statement that you're done. Maybe he's made a statement. Who's in the paparazzi that gets the gig to go photograph Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle 20 years ago?
I was just looking it up. They actually in the new version, which is on Hulu, the guy that plays Dewey isn't in it. Yeah. So they they have a new actor who plays the adult version of Dewey, and then they show the original actor just in in flashbacks via archival footage. So he didn't even come back for this one.
Sonday, do you not like Joe Dirt because it's a flashback movie and you hate flashbacks?
That may be it. Uh yeah. Uh you nailed it. I just don't like the format. Yeah. Maybe the sequel is not. I imagine the sequel isn't flashback. You think they brought back the same trick? He's like on a different radio show?
He's on a podcast now.
Yeah. Yeah, maybe I'll like the animated series. I will say we didn't really touch on this, but I was surprised that it didn't age that as poorly as I expected. Like I expected like some like, ooh, this is a little problematic. I mean, I guess it was you know, two thousand.
There's a little language here and there that is fallen out of style. Yeah. Yeah. A little light R word and Q.
Q's the keyword around. Took me a second. All right. That keyword. Okay. Yeah.
Him always taking the same stance and patting his arms before to get into a fight. Yeah. Uh I agree that like we watched Roxbury, which came out in ninety-eight. Yeah, yeah. Um, and this came out in 2001. And the difference between the two, like, one felt like a dated movie. Joe Dirt did not feel like a dated movie. Like it felt right like the same kind of movies they're making now. And I think I think it's in the vein of like uh Ace Ventura Pet Detective and Anchor Man and the sort of, oh, what a wild character. Let's just follow them around for the whole movie.
I would agree with that. It it did the Roxberry also had some language in it that didn't age well, but I thought was worse than than Joe Dirt. And Joe Dirt, I'm surprised it's 25 years old. There's nothing in it that feels dated, like the technology, like he's always using like tape decks and shit anyway, because he's he's white trash. So it doesn't matter. I'm surprised hearing that there's only three years between them because they feel like 10 years apart. Did did you guys catch that in in Night at the Roxberry and Joe Dirt, they used the line, if I told you you had a great body, would you hold it against me? Very big in that era, I guess. Yeah.
Yeah. I thought that was like a secret theme that Aude was doing with the movie. Every movie has to have that line in it. Yeah. Uh, do you guys want Two Truths and a Life for this movie? Yeah. Yeah. Um the home video release of Joe Dirt was delayed because an actual person named Joe Dirt filed uh a lawsuit. Dennis Miller's character was originally offered to Kelsey Grammar, but he turned it down. Um and Silvertown is a real town in Idaho, and they have a Joe Dirt statue uh in the town. That's a good one.
Those are all good. I have a guess. Go. Kelsey Grammar.
Okay. I'm gonna guess that there was a real Joe Dirt. Uh they were all made up. I just did that to make a name.
Nice. Three lies. Uh uh, that was one of my truths. Yeah. Yeah, I spoiled one of my truths with the Christopher Watkins salary thing. So I yeah.
Yeah, uh that was a good set. They all sounded true, but they all sounded like a lie. Do you have all picks for this? What do you what do you have, Andrew?
Uh I have uh Lost and Found, which was a movie that came out in 1999 when they thought maybe David Spade is a romantic lead, and they did a it's a it's basically a romantic comedy. It's a little bit sort of SNL, like it's a little bit more of a a David Spade comedy, but it's it's basically just a straight romantic comedy uh with uh Sophie Murceau who is delightful in it, and I liked it a lot growing up, and I I re-watched it this week too, just for the the fun of it, and it it holds up all right.
I don't know.
Is in it as well, um, and he's pretty funny in it. Is he still alive?
Yeah.
Are we just talking about him? Yeah. Yeah.
There's a whole bit in uh in that movie where he wants to be exactly like David Spade, so he like dyes his hair and starts dressing like him, and it's pretty good. What's it called? Lost and Found? Lost and Found. Nice David Spade is like a sort of he owns a restaurant and he's kind of a popular guy in the neighborhood, but this Sophie Merceau moves in next door and he basically kidnaps her dog to have a excuse to talk to her. Hijinks and Sue.
That's a good uh tease to next uh next week. We have Artie Lang in our next movie.
Oh yeah. What's your alt pick, Aaron? Um my altpick is only very loosely uh related to this in that I'm going off vibes for my altpick. I picked Kingpin, the Woody Harrelson uh Bill Murray movie, uh about bowling. Uh just because I mean it's got some SNL connections with the cast, but uh Joe Dirt felt like a road movie to me, and this was also a road movie uh comedy, so but funnier, so yeah. Similar Kingpin's good feeling. It's yeah, it's fun.
Yeah, I love Kingpin. What'd you pick? I didn't do my homework. I don't have an alt pick. I think I was just just happy to get through this movie.
Oh, wait, wait, wait. Barely watched it, didn't have an alt pick. Holy cow. I thought this was a professional production. What's going on, guys?
Oh, this is the worst movie podcast.
Yeah, yeah.
I actually have to like temper our professionalism just on purpose to stay on brand.
You know what? I'm not gonna watch this movie this week. I'll just wing it. Yeah. I don't think I asked you.
So where is this on the Aaron scale?
I would give this a three. Like it's it's a middle-of-the-road bad movie for me. Like it's it made me laugh. It's not gonna win any awards. It's not so bad, it's good.
Yeah. Fair enough.
What did you give it on your letterbox? One star.
Maybe I'm being too maybe I was too impulsive in my once, you know, maybe I How was your headspace when you watched it? Well, we had a major plumbing issue and had to spend the night in the hotel. So um so things are starting to make sense on the first episode of Hotel R Yeah, but I'm sure it influenced me. But uh I I watched the first part of it before all that stuff went down. So I think I was already just kind of like, I don't get it. Um, and then all that kind of happened in the middle of me watching it.
So And this movie was kind of a success, I think. Like it did pretty well compared to its budget.
Yeah. It it was 18 million budget, 31 million box office. So it wasn't like I would probably call that breakeven once you have marketing and all that stuff. I think it was just it was kind of more of a cult following sort of thing.
Yeah, I wonder how it did on DVD. My guess is not I mean, they're making an animated sequel 25 years later. So somebody somebody was watching this thing.
Yeah, I mean, they're they're remaking a lot of stuff, you know, these days. But I was gonna say the fact that like the sequel didn't go to theaters, it was like direct to streaming, uh probably says that it wasn't successful enough.
Yeah, I mean for the other comedies of its day, even like Anchorman or Old School, they did they did like double the box office this did.
I feel like Anchorman had to have you know like blown this out of the water.
Not as much as you'd think. It was uh 85 million US.
Um Yeah, I think total box office was 264, which is what I was looking at. So it was almost like 10 times as much.
Oh, okay, yeah. Then Yeah, I think that David Spade just doesn't have the star like draw that Will Farrell does. Or Chris Farley. Like he always is kind of to me the sidekick. Yeah. Yeah. So I think that that movie may have suffered from that a little bit.
To be fair, I did try to find an alt pick. I usually try to like look and like, okay, what other David Spade movies are like, no, not well known, but I love. And I mean I'm not gonna be like, oh yeah, my alt pick is Tommy Boy, because I don't know, like that's cheating. Um and he's not even yeah, I I I don't think I've on his list there wasn't anything where it was like, oh, David Spade was the lead on this that I've seen and loved. And um so and I felt like that kind of running through the cast, like that felt like the same way. So I kind of gave up. But yes, to David to the point about David Spade, yeah, I for s for whatever reason, he doesn't seem to have had the star power as like you said, Will Farrell or others. Yeah.
I'm looking at Jamie Presley's IMDB, and I feel like I don't I haven't seen anything that she's in.
Yeah, I was a little bit surprised by that too. I was like, oh, Jamie Presley, like she's got a like seems like she is a star, was a star. Even even to be honest, that mom's show, I I like looked at it briefly. Uh, she's not even like top billing on that. Yeah. Surprising. Yeah. I saw I Love You Man. Yeah, but was she a big part of that?
I don't even remember. I think she was just a friend.
Yeah, that's wild.
Yeah, what happened to her?
I don't know. Yeah, it seemed like she could have been.
Jamie, if you're listening, she was in. Tell us what's going on. How are you doing, Jimmy?
Yeah, write in worst moviepodcasts at gmail.com. Uh and then uh I thought Britney Daniel was really good in in the movie too. Like I I guess we didn't really talk about her, but again, looking through her IMDb, I'm like, huh, just never heard of any of this stuff. So kind of surprising. Agree.
Yeah.
I mean, other than like a few characters, a lot of the cast are people that I don't recognize.
I did see that uh Roseanne Barr and Gary Busey were Joe's parents originally, and they uh they filmed some of it, and then Roseanne Barr like walked offset one day and never came back, and they ref they reshot the parent scenes. Gary Busey's probably like, fuck. Yeah, poor Gary Busey. Just collateral damage in somebody else's problems. They couldn't keep Gary Busey. Why did why did they it's a great question. You didn't even watch the movie, so that's as far as I got with my research. I watched it. Okay.
All right. Well, that's about all we've got. If you guys have any thoughts, comments, questions, send us a note at the worst movie podcast at gmail.com. Amade.
